South of india; Mumbai, Goa & Kerala

Hier zijn we weer! Om eerlijk te zijn loop ik nogal achter met de blog, en ik kan de energie niet vinden om een volledig verslag te schrijven over het zuiden van India. Ik denk dat het ook nogal een saai verhaal zou worden, dus Joe heeft zoals altijd een entertaining filmpje gemaakt. Om toe te lichten zal ik de high- en lowlights even bij elkaar zetten, voordat we verdergaan naar Sri Lanka. Ook de foto’s zeggen meer dan 1000 woorden, dus die zal ik wel even uploaden.

Mumbai

Highlights: Dhobi Ghat – De grootste buiten wasserette ter wereld, waar alle kleine wasjes, grote wasjes, en ongelofelijke wasjes gedaan worden voor alle inwoners van Mumbai, zo’n 20 miljoen mensen. Hier zie je alle waslijnen met alle (in de rivier gewassen, één groot zeepbellenfestijn) was uithangen. Erg gaaf om te zien, en joost mag weten hoe ze alles uit elkaar kunnen houden, Joe heeft al moeite met zwarte en witte sokken te scheiden!

Slumdog Milionaire: We zagen waar Slumdog Millionaire is gefilmd en waar het karakter uit de film is opgegroeid. Het is echt net als in de film! Mumbai heeft het grootste aantal sloppenwijken ter wereld en het is ongelofelijk om de armoede hier te zien.

Bollywood: Zoals de naam al verklapt het Hollywood van India. Hier wonen de rich & famous, maar ik weet zeker dat de Hollywoodstars hier nog geen kop koffie willen drinken.

Goa

Lowlights: “De Costa Del Sol van India!” LOW SEASON. “Maar toch wel een paar toeristen zeker?” NEE. “Helemaal niemand?” NEE. We zaten als enige in een resort met 500 kamers. “Oh dat is wel lekker, heb je heel het zwembad voor jezelf!” Ja dat wel ja, en dat gaat ook niet vervelen na 3 dagen…En de lege restaurants waar de vis al een jaar in de vriezer ligt te wachten en het personeel gaat zuchten als je binnenkomt omdat ze moeten stoppen met het potje kaarten was ook heel aantrekkelijk…

Highlight: Het per ongeluk slopen van de verlichting in de sportzaal in ons resort, omdat ik iets te enthousiast voetballessen aan het nemen was. Kan ook aan de bal gelegen hebben… (zie video) Wat twee weken zou zijn werd vier dagen in Goa, waarna we snel een ticket naar Kerala boekte.

Kerala

Lowlights: LOW SEASON. God ik ga al gapen als ik erover moet schrijven. Ik houd het dus kort.

Highlights:

- Kookcursus: super leuk en lekker, bij een Indiaas stel in eigen keuken geleerd hoe we 10 heerlijke Indiase gerechten maken, en hoe je dit zelfs in de westerse wereld in echt Indische stijl kunt koken. Dat was wel echt top!

- Boottrip door de Kerala waterways; bootje huren voor een paar uur die door alle kleine waterwegen vaart zodat je een kijkje krijgt in het echte leven van de mensen op het platteland in Kerala. Niet alleen mooi maar ook nog echt lekker rustgevend.

En toen vlogen we na een maand in India te zijn geweest naar Sri Lanka. Toen we in Colombo – de hoofdstad- aankwamen was het net of we in New York geland waren. OVERAL toeristen, en BLANKE toeristen! EN mensen spraken goed Engels, en mensen wilden ons helpen! HAAAAALLELUJA! Ik vermoed dat de Sri Lanke blog iets boeiender zal zijn, gewoon omdat we daar echt een toptijd gehad hebben!

Ben ik blij dat ik naar India gegaan ben? Ja. Wil ik er ooit nog terug naartoe? Waarschijnlijk niet. Wilt Joe er ooit nog terug naartoe? Absoluut niet. Ben ik blij dat deze India blog nu klaar is? …

ENGLISH VERSION: SOUTH OF INDIA: MUMBAI, GOA, KERALA

Hello peepsyo! Because I am pretty far behind with the blog, and honestly I cannot find the motivation to write a full story about the south of India at the moment, I will keep it really short and won’t bore you with any details. Joe has made a pretty entertaining video like always, so that and the pictures will give you a good idea of the south, and just to add some words to it I will give some high- and lowlights.

Mumbai

Highlights: Dhobi Ghat; the biggest outside laundromat in the world. All Mumbai’s laundry get’s done here (20 mil people), so it’s just lines and lines and lines and lines full of laundry. They wash it in the river next to the Ghat and create one big bubblebath with that, before hanging it all out. No clue how they can remember what belongs to who, it’s amazing!

Slumdog Millionaire: We drove around the slums of Mumbai, and saw where Slumdog Millionaire was filmed and where the character in the film grew up. Pretty impressive, considering Mumbai counts most slums in the whole world.

Bollywood: Like the name suggests the Indian Hollywood, where the rich and famous lives. Definitely not as rich and famous as the Hollywood stars, as George Clooney would surely call these ‘Mansions’ dumps.

Goa

Lowlights: It’s the Costa del Sol of India. IN THE HIGH SEASON THOUGH. There was NOBODY there, literally NOBODY. We were the only ones in our 500 room resort. FUN. The fish that had been waiting in the restaurants for over half a year and staff that was half asleep didn’t make up for much either, so we got out of there within a week.

Highlights: Me destroying the lamps in the gym. (By accident) That’s how bad it got.

Kerala

Highlights: Cooking course; So much fun to learn to make 10 delicious Indian dishes in a home kitchen with a lovely couple who thought us some tips and tricks, it’s better than the UK bake off of whatever that program is called.

Boattrip through Kerala backwaters: to see the life of the Indian people in the countryside from close by, whilst sitting back and relaxing in a little slow boat.

And then we flew to Sri Lanka after one month in India, which was like landing in NYC. White tourists everywhere, English speaking and helpful people, good and cheap food, it really is such a nice country! I would personally call it India ‘Light’ ;)

Am I happy I went to India? Yes. Would I ever want to go back? Probably not. Does Joe ever wants to go back? Absolutely not. Am I happy this is the end of the blog? …;)
