Chilean Chills - English Version Underneath!

Daar zijn we weer! Alweer eventjes geleden en weer ontzettend veel meegemaakt! De vorige keer zijn we geëindigd in Santiago, de hoofdstad van Chili, waar we met onze vrienden Simon en Flu in een airbnb zaten. Na Santiago gingen we naar Santa Cruz in de Colchagua wijnregio, de beste van Chili! Hier bezochten we de Viu Manent wijngaard, waar we een wijntour en proeverij deden, en aansluitend een fantastische gastronomische lunch hadden in het schitterende glazen restaurant te midden van de wijngaard. Heerlijk eten met uitmuntende wijnen erbij, al met al een fantastische paar dagen!

Na Santa Cruz gingen we door naar het kleurrijke Valparaiso. Een grote kuststad waar meer te beleven valt dan in Santiago. Hier zaten we weer 5 dagen in een AirBnB met Simon en Flu, midden in het centrum. Valparaiso is levendig door het grote aantal mensen, er is van alles te doen, je kunt geen muur vinden zonder graffiti en dit is de stad zijn kunst. De leukste, grappigste en indrukwekkendste graffiti ter wereld vindt je hier, en het zijn dan ook voornamelijk echte kunstwerken. Het grappige van Valparaiso is dat de stad gebouwd is rondom 3 bergen, waar je met een soort van cable cart naar boven gaat om dan dat deel, 1000 m hoger, te bezoeken. Hier deden we een walking tour waar we meer over de stad te weten kwamen en gingen we uit eten in een heel gezellig restaurantje met uitzicht over de hele stad!

Na alle stedentrips was het eindelijk weer eens tijd voor.. het strand! Een van de heerlijkste stranddorpen van Chili waar het gelukkig nog niet zo toeristisch is en je nog lekker 50 m2 strand voor jezelf kunt hebben is in Bahia Inglesa. Niet makkelijk om te komen, maar een heerlijke tussenstop voor 2 dagen!

Na Bahia Inglesa namen we een 23 uur durende bus naar Calama, waar we een nachtje bleven om te acclimatiseren. Calama is een grote industriestad en er is verder niks te beleven, maar een uur en 800 m lager gelegen van San Pedro de Atacama, onze volgende bestemming.

De dag daarna namen we de bus naar San Pedro de Atacama, een toeristenhub maar niet zonder reden – midden in de droogste en hoogste woestijn ter wereld: de Atacamawoestijn. San Pedro is een klein dorpje en met een beetje inbeelding zie je zo Zorro op zijn paard nog voorbij stormen. Voor degene die Zorro niet kennen (onder welke steen heb je gelegen?); een super klein dorpje met alleen zandpaden en 5 straten op 2800 meter hoogte in de woestijn, waar cowboys links ter paard gaan en rechts 10 touroperators op rij in d’r hele kleine kantoortjes je allerlei woestijntours aan proberen te smeren. Gewoonweg geweldig! Elk moment kan Clint Eastwood met een wild wild west tune de saloon uit komen lopen, eerder met een empanada in elke hand dan een pistool, maar toch..

Vanuit hier deden we een astronomie tour, omdat de Atacama woestijn één van de mooiste en beste plekken ter wereld is om de sterren te bekijken. We werden om middernacht opgehaald met een grote jeep die ons de woestijn inreed, waar onze gids ons vervolgens eerst een uur “astronomie les” gaf en ons vervolgens meenam naar een donker plekje met een gigantische telescoop. Hij legde de sterren eerst uit ‘met het blote oog’ voordat we het nog wat beter konden bekijken door de telescoop. We leerden hoe de Southern Cross, de grote beer en planeet Jupiter te herkennen, en hoe je kunt zien hoeveel lichtjaren de sterren verwijderd zijn. Ontzettend interessant, en ontzettend romantisch zo onder de sterrenhemel in de woestijn!

Vanuit San Pedro gingen we de volgende dag nog verder de woestijn in waar we na verloop van tijd de zandduinen op liepen om de zonsondergang in Valle de La Luna te zien, en ook dat was de moeite zeer zeker waard! We hadden de eerste dag in San Pedro allemaal een beetje last van hoogteziekte, maar gelukkig kwam het bij Joe en mij niet verder dan moe en lichte hoofdpijn. De volgende dag werd Flu redelijk ziek en moest vervolgens ook echt op bed gaan liggen om bij te komen, en Simon sliep voornamelijk, want hoogteziekte kan erg uitputtend zijn.

Na San Pedro staken we de grens over, midden in de nacht, naar Bolivia. Om 5 uur ’s ochtends stonden we voor de Boliviaanse grens, maar als enige want de douane of administratie daar was nog niet wakker. Om 7 uur kwamen ze eindelijk aankakken – en dan denk je toch – de bus die wij namen vertrekt elke dag op dezelfde tijd, dus zouden ze nou echt elke dag al die mensen 2 uur laten wachten?? Ja hoor, welkom in Bolivia!

Hoewel Colombia voor mij nog steeds op nummer 1 staat van Zuid Amerikaanse landen, Bolivia is zeer zeker de tweede favoriet. Het is er anders, arm, onbeleefd, moeilijk, afstandelijk, authentiek, maar o zo ongelofelijk mooi!

Het heeft absoluut alles; van de woestijn tot de oneindige zoutvlaktes, de authentieke plekken waar ze nog creperen in de mijnen tot de mooie witte stad Sucre, de levendige hoofdstad met overal uitzicht en de beste infrastructuur op hoogte ter wereld, de Amazone en de Jungle, en het hoogste meer ter wereld: Lake Titicaka. Ik ben verkocht…

Omdat ik de verhalen die ik post niet te groot wil maken post ik ons Bolivia avontuur van de week even apart, dus stay tuned, wordt vervolgd!!

CHILEAN CHILLS - ENGLISH VERSION 

Here we are again! It has been a while since our last adventure where we ended in Santiago, in a nice AirBnB with our friends Flu and Simon. After Santiago we went to Santa Cruz, 3 hours south of Santiago in the Colchagua Winevalley, the best wine region of Chile! We visited the famous vineyard Viu Manent, where we did a winetour, a tasting and where we ended our day with an amazing lunch in the glass covered restaurant in the middle of the vineyard. Delicious food combined with superb wines and good company.. we had a few lovely days here!

After Santa Cruz we moved onto colourful Valparaiso. A big city at the coast that is more alive than Santiago. We spent another 5 days here with Simon and Flu in an AirBnB in the middle of the center. Valparaiso is alive because of the great number of people that live here, there is lots to do and you cannot find a wall without grafitti which is the cities proud artwork. Here you’ll find the funniest, biggest, nicest and most impressive grafitti paintings in the world, and it is hard to find a wall without any. The funny thing about Valparaiso is that the city is build around 3 mountains, only accessible with cable cart to visit this part of the city that preaches out 1000 meters above the rest of the city. We had dinner in a lovely restaurant here with a view of the whole city.

After all these citytrips it was finally time fors ome relaxation at the beach! One of the best beach places in Chile is Bahia Inglesa, not very touristy at all which means you have most of the beach to yourself. A great place to relax for two days.

After Bahia Inglesa we took the 22 hour bus to Calama, where we spent the night just to acclimatise. Calama is a big industrial city and has not much to offer, but it lies 800 meter below San Pedro de Atacama where we were heading next. The day after we took the bus to San Pedro, a touristhub but not without reason – in the middle of the dryest and highest desert in the world: The Atacama Desert. It’s a tiny town and with some imagination you can see Zorro riding by on his horse. For the ones who don’t know who Zorro is (under which rock have you been the last decade?) a very small town with dusty sandy roads with just 5 streets at 2800 meters height, where cowboys left ride by on their horse and on the other side 10 different touroperators try to sell you their deserttours from their tiny sandy offices. Clint Eastwood could literally step out of one of the bars with a wild west tune in the back, eating an empanada… It’s a great place!

From San Pedro we did a stargazing tour, as the Atacama desert is one of the best places in the world to see the stars. They picked us up in the middle of the night with a big jeep to take us into the desert where we met our guide who first gave us a ‘astronomy lesson’ before taking us further into the desert. He first tought us how to see the stars with the naked eye before we had a closer look through his massive telescope. We learned how to see how many lightyears away some stars were, how to recognise the big bear and southern cross and how to recognise Jupiter. Very interesting and very romantic under a big starsky!

From San Pedro we also went further into the desert where we walked up the dunes and saw a georgeous sunset at Valle de la Luna, which was worth the hike! When we arrived in San Pedro we all got a little bit altitude sickness, but luckily Joe and I just got a headache and we were very tired. The next day Flu came back from a daytrip pretty ill and she suffered a bit more, where Simon was mainly tired as altitude sickness can be exhausting.

After San Pedro we crossed the border in the middle of the night to go to Bolivia. At 5 am we were waiting at the Bolivian border, as only ones as the Bolivian authorities weren’t awake yet. You would think – with this bus leaving every day at the same time – they would be there 24/7 to secure immigration, but no, zero care. Would they really do this the same every day? Yes they do! Welcome to Bolivia!

Although Colombia is and will be my number one of South American countries, Bolivia is a very close second. It is a different, rude, distant, poor, difficult, authentic place, but it is so so beautiful!! It has absolutely everything to offer, from the desert to the endless saltflats, the authentic places where they still suffer at the mines to stunning white city Sucre, from the highest capital with a great infrastructure made for height, de Amazon and the jungle, and the highest lake in the world; lake Titicaca. I am sold!

Because I don’t want stories that are too long I will break this one up now and tell you more about beautiful Bolivia tomorrow, so stay tuned!!
